Behind Closed Doors, the Price of Money for Your European Stocks Is Being Decided

Lagarde is leaving the ECB nine months early, and markets celebrated with a rally. Interest rates are almost a done deal. The new ECB chief will decide something else—and France is trading support for the job for a different seat.

Key points

  • Lagarde is leaving the ECB nine months early, and European stocks responded by rising to a seven-week high.

  • A December rate hike to 2.75% is practically a done deal; her successor will inherit a cycle that is almost over.

  • France’s 10-year yield has topped 5% for the first time since 2002, and its spread over Germany is the widest since 2011.

  • The ECB has had an emergency tool in its drawer for four years that it has never used, and activating it hinges on a single word.

  • France is backing the most hawkish candidate and asking for a different seat on the ECB’s Executive Board in return.

The market celebrated as if it were just a name on the door

Christine Lagarde announced on October 29 that she would leave the helm of the European Central Bank on February 7, 2027, nine months before her term was due to end. The market reaction looked like textbook indifference. The STOXX 600 closed up 0.77% at 649.11 points, its highest level since September 8; Germany’s DAX gained 1.4%, and the euro fell to 1.113 dollars, its lowest level since May. Commentators described a market “without a reaction” and a personnel change that changed nothing.

But a different position is being filled from the one the market is pricing. The ECB president will not be the arbiter of interest rates over the next two years. They will be the person who, during the next French debt crisis, says whether market movements are “unwarranted” and whether the ECB should press the emergency button for the first time in its history.

This question has nothing to do with inflation. And that is exactly why it is dangerous to treat Lagarde’s departure as merely a name change on the door.
